Building our capability and capacity to meet local content in Brazil
Fully dedicated to the Brazilian Oil and Gas market, SBM Offshore has strengthened its capacity for project execution by investing in a project office in Rio de Janeiro and a new construction yard in nearby Niterói.
Through a joint venture with Naval Ventures Corp (Synergy Group), SBM Offshore continues to expand Brazilian content in the oil and gas services market. In late 2011, the ESTALEIRO BRASA yard was born in the heart of Niterói, a city well-known in the offshore and shipping industry. The location of the yard in Guanabara Bay is unique and convenient. Situated just across the Niteroi Bridge from Rio de Janeiro, it has space allowing the freedom to engineer and build modules in the best way possible. With the help of local partners it can accommodate more than two projects at a time.
The yard’s 65,000 m² of work space allows for fabrication, load-out, integration and commissioning of an FPSO with a short delivery time. It is able to handle the integration of one FPSO and the construction of modules for another in parallel. In addition to increasing Brazilian autonomy in the oil and gas industry, this new yard is one of the few fully dedicated to FPSOs. It has created new jobs, currently employing 2,200 people and provides training for employees – preparing a new generation of technicians and engineers to serve future Brazilian developments. The Chief Executive of Petrobras, Maria das Gracas Foster has personally invested her time visiting the yard – such is its importance to the nationally owned company’s operations.
Pelicano floating crane
In addition to the construction and assembly of topside modules and other systems and equipment, the yard has a Pelicano floating crane, which provides heavy lift solutions and services. The crane it will meet the heavy lifting (> 500T) requirements for placing FPSO modules and equipment onto the decks of FPSOs and will be unique in Brazil.
José Miranda Formigli Filho, Petrobras Exploration and Production Director says “I believe that SBM Offshore brings the expertise to the local market and more than that can also bring the mind-set to deliver what is contracted. SBM Offshore and BRASA will really contribute to the development of local capacity for delivering big projects like Ilhabela. We look at this local content issue as an opportunity to develop the country.”
At BRASA, SBM Offshore’s quality and safety standards are always met during the construction phase and delivery dates are achieved.
